Acquiring the track

I started off the project with my layout. After taking a bunch of ideas and spending many practice layout sessions with friends, I finally made my decision. We created approximate measurements of the layout and then roughly calculated out how much and what pieces of track would be needed. I then headed off to Ebay and other places to track down aristocraft track.

Obtaining the lumber

Once I had a good portion of the track, I set off to find a place to supply me with lumber. I tried a couple local mills and was planning on getting them to mill the support rails and the ties. This turned out to be pretty expensive since each cut would require them to plane two sides of each cut which added up quickly in the labor side of things.
Based on this feedback I decided to go to my local home depot and start looking into the hardwood they had thier. I found that they carried precut lumber that is 1/2 x 1/2 x 36 that was PERFECT for making ties. (I need approx 2200 of them) I also found that they sell maple stock that is 1 x 2 x ???. If I rip these boards in half and then plane them they work well for the rails. Luckily I have a table saw and Nick has a planer so this proved to be a nice way to go. Below is a photo of the lumber and rails after they are cut and planed and then clamped together for storage:
